Recently I photographed Elie Honig, the new director of the Division of Criminal Justice for the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, as he talked to a reporter from The Star-Ledger. I like this image. That sun-spot he is reaching for is actually an off camera flash reflecting in the window and the table top. Every now and then your subject, your lighting and your timing on the shutter button all come together to make what could be a run-of-the-mill feature profile something a bit more compelling. I knew it when I made the photograph that this would be my favorite from the assignment.
I do very much like the portrait I made of him in the lobby of the building. Here is a lawyer that has taken on members of organized crime and won! It’s an impressive record and I wanted the portraits of him that accompanied the newspaper story to reflect his no-nonsense personality.
